Time Line Therapy
Time Line Therapy (TLT) is a therapeudic process where a series of techniques are used to bring about changes on an unconscious level and assist in altering behavior for the better. The intention of this therapy is to help individuals refrain from being reactive to present situations based on their past experiences. TLT is a reprogramming process that releases the effects of negative experiences and helps a person to let go of past influences.
No one lives their life without experiencing a few less than welcome surprises. Providing perspective on troubling events and finding ways to resolve those events is a challenging situation for most. Help is often needed to reduce emotional upset, but most people don’t have the means or the tools to do this on their own. TLT trains people how to tame or manage their reactive natures whenever life throws those unwanted curve balls.
TLT training can assist with the emotional release, adjustment, and acceptance of these events in our lives. This psychological program could be beneficial for anyone who has the habit of hanging on to grievances, or someone who is having difficulty recovering fully from the shock of a loss (death, divorce, job loss, etc.). Burying past hurts and continuing to hold on to them is not a healthy way to live and ignoring the problem while still holding on to these past hurts is not the same as finding a resolution. Resolution means releasing those negative emotions and working towards moving forward without being tied or chained to yesterday’s wounds.
Become a Critical Thinker
Critical thinking is often required with this process but is not always an easy thing to do. Self-analysis is perhaps a better way of looking at the situation. Being honest about the facts involves separating yourself from preconceived notions and looking at new situations in a fresh light.
How the Process Works
Clients are required to create an actual timeline of the notable events in their life from birth to present time and to present them in chronological order. Notations are made of both the high points and low points. This can be done on your own or as a group therapy project. Be sure to allow yourself time to reflect on each event and be sure to focus on any segment connected to it that brings up emotional responses. You can use colored markers to highlight significant events that are very emotionally-charged or you can put a happy face on the positive events and a sad face on the less than positive ones. The choice is yours.
The hard work begins after the timeline is drawn. It involves a lot of inward reflection and delving into how each event has molded your personality, how you related to the situation, to others involved, and so on. Be sure to identify the triggers and begin asking yourself questions. The exercise is meant to open up any hurts that still have their grip on you so you can address them and allow your healing to begin. The good news on this exercise is that you get to re-write your story!
