NEEDLES ANYONE???
Like some of you, I have never been a fan of needles and have always tried to avoid them at all costs, but I have recently changed my perspective on them in certain situations. My neighbor recently relayed a story about a friend of hers that had gone to a local Acupuncturist for a variety of issues and she was expressing her delight at the outcome of her first visit.
I have been dealing with my own shoulder issue (tennis injury) for a few years now and after trying alot of other treatments, haven’t really had any change with the stiffness and pain. After hearing her story, I decided to be adventurous and give it a try. I decided to allow myself to be open to the possibility that it could once and for all heal my shoulder. I had previously allowed my fear of needles to cloud my options and override such a possibility.
It is so interesting how the specific placement of the needles can clear our meridians in the body to help alleviate stress, pain and blockages. My shoulder has been a bit of a mystery to the practitioners I have gone to in the past which is why I am still struggling to find a solution after two years time. My current practitioner is working on my issue with great hope of being the one to finally resolve this issue.
I was very excited to find out that I had gained an extra benefit from my recent visit. A few years ago I began experiencing double vision out of my right eye which was very disconcerting and came out of the blue. I was a bit worried so I scheduled an appointment with the eye doctor who quickly referred me to a Neurologist Ophthalmologist. He scheduled a CAT scan of my eye to see what might be causing it. The resulting diagnosis was that it was some sort of genetic palsy of the eye and surrounding nerves and he guessed that it had most likely been there since birth. The good news was that I didn’t have a brain tumor or any other more serious underlying issue, but the downside was that he informed me that this palsy is degenerative in nature and only gets worse with age. There is no treatment so I was told I would just have to learn to live with it and adapt by closing one eye when looking to the right side.
Fast forward two years to my most recent visit. You won’t believe what happened. She put needles on the top of my head and a few over by my ears. She had never placed them there before so I thought it was a bit odd. Since I know absolutely nothing about the placement of the needles, I had no specific expectations but I thought it was strange to treat my shoulder with needles in my head. As I was driving home, I suddenly realized that I didn’t have the double vision when I glanced to the right side, I could see normally!!! How could this be? As I wracked my brain trying to figure it out, I came to the realization that of course everything is connected, and somehow there must have been a blockage somewhere between my brain and my eye that had been causing the double vision. Perhaps I didn’t have a degenerative palsy at all; that was a very comforting thought.
At this point, I am looking forward to my next visit to see what other things might reverse themselves as I continue my treatment. It just goes to show you that there are many ways to treat issues. Western medicine surely has it’s place, but holistic methods have their place too and are often discounted as voodoo, woo woo and other irrational descriptions when in reality, they have proven time and time again to be just as effective and often very valuable options for treatment.
What I have learned is that an open mind and an open heart can bring about amazing results. Why not be open to the possibilities? I am so grateful that I did…
