Holistic Healing Tools
As you probably know, each type of Holistic Practitioner has their own specific tools of their trade and over time, they have come to know what they like, what works best and what resonates with them as well as their clients. Here are some common tools that massage therapists, energy medicine practitioners, Native American medicine healers, and other holistic healers utilize to help facilitate healing and promote balance and wellness while working with their clients.
Massage Wands
Natural crystal wands can be used during massage and reflexology sessions. The rounded end is used as a stroking tool where the practitioner can use various pressures directly on the body. The pointed end is used to channel energy within the auric field.
White Sage
Using a smudging tool is a natural part of many Native American traditions. The burning of herbs for spiritual, psychic and emotional purification is also common practice among many religious, healing, and spiritual groups. A healer will often smudge his healing space before and after treating clients. White sage is primarily grown in California, and is commonly called “Sacred Sage”. It is considered the purest of all medicinal sage plant varieties and is best used as a smudging tool in purification ceremonies.
Feng Shui Compass
The Chinese “Lo Pan” (Feng Shui Compass) is used by the practitioner to find the best chi locations for interior decorating and exterior architectural design.
Braided Sweetgrass
Sweetgrass braids are used for medicinal and ceremonial tools. They are burnt during prayer ceremonies because their sweet aroma is said to attract “good spirits.”
Carved Reiki Stone Set
These carved stones are not a typical tool used by vast majority of Reiki practitioners. Reiki symbols however, can be used to increase energy and to help to direct the flow of chi. The four main Reiki symbols depicted on stones are the Master Symbol, Power Symbol, Harmony Symbol, and the Connection Symbol.
Massage Stones
Smooth and flat stones are typically used in Hot Stone Therapy. The heated stones are placed at specific points on the client’s body to promote relaxation and to help to open up the meridians (energy pathways). Massage oils are also usually incorporated into the massage treatment.
Pendulums
Pendulums are used for reading imbalances in the human energy field, especially the chakras. Wooden Pendulums are recommended over those made of crystal or metal because wood possesses subtle energies in comparison to the energies often housed in metals and crystals. The more highly energy-charged the pendulum is, the more difficult to get a clear reading with it. This is especially true if the pendulum has not been cleared properly. Be sure to clear your pendulum regularly, especially if you have bought a new one as it will be carrying energies from others who have handled it prior to you receiving it. Pendulums are very personal and need to be attuned to the user before using.
Mortar and Pestle
Mortar and Pestle is the traditional tool used for grinding up medicinal and culinary herbs, incense, etc.
Reiki Timer
The Reiki practitioner can program this special timer to chime at preset intervals. There are eight possible settings every 2, 2 ½ , 3, 4, 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes for up to 90 minutes. The chimes can serve as a reminder to the practitioner to switch Reiki hand-placements during a healing session. The timer’s quiet sounding signal can be used by any type of therapist or healer to help regulate their sessions without having to keep moving their attentions to watching a clock.
Tuning Forks
Tuning forks are not just for science or music. The resonant tones of these simple instruments can be used for healing.
Singing Bowls
These musical bowls generate sacred sounds and create different tones depending on the level of water placed inside the bowl. Certain tones invoke certain energy centers (chakras) for healing, balancing, and meditation.
Feather Fans
Feather fans can help to clear away stagnant or negative energies. They can be used in moving incense or smudged smoke during healing ceremonies or rituals. The fans or whisks can also be used in clearing away unwanted energies before and after healing treatments.
Massage Tables
Portable massage tables are very durable and reasonably easy to carry from place to place so they are the ideal tool for many practitioners. You can buy basic models inexpensively as well as more sophisticated models that are wider, more cushioned and have more attachments depending upon the needs of your practice.
Essential Oil Diffusers
An aromatherapy diffuser is used to disperse essential oils into the healer’s work space. There are various kinds of diffusers as well as a variety of sizes and aesthetics based on what each practitioner wants and/or needs for their specific application.
Acupuncture Models
Acupuncture pressure points and meridians are marked on teaching models of the human anatomy.
Ear Candles
Organic Beeswax Ear Candles are used in Ear Candling (also called Ear Coning) which is an ancient healing method originating in Egypt still in use today at alternative medicine clinics and holistic centers. Ear candles can be purchased at metaphysical stores, holistic health markets and online shops.

The wands can also be used for directing a pathway for healing energies to flow inward or negative energies to flow outward.
