Selenite is best known for being a clearing and a purification crystal. It can be used to clear negativity or stuck energy from the aura, and to clear crystals by placing them on top of a flat piece of selenite.  Because of it’s clearing properties, it does not need to be cleansed or charged itself.

Other crystals can be attached to selenite wands to blend together and amplify their effects.  You may have seen these in retail outlets selling crystals.  Due to its flexibility and harmonizing effects, it is the ideal stone to use for making crystal healing tools that combine multiple gemstones. One commonly used example is to attach (via glue or wire) a stone for each of the chakras in order along a selenite wand. This can help balance and activate the chakras.

Selenite is commonly used in crystal grids.  Second only to quartz, selenite is one of the most versatile and useful crystals for crystal healers to own.  Selenite is also widely used to open and activate the crown chakra, third eye, and the “etheric chakras” above the head. These are the gateways to higher realms.

Selenite is a form of gypsum, a soft mineral with a hardness of 2 on the Mohs scale.  Its chemical composition is calcium sulfate dihydrate and it can form into huge crystals that can measure many feet across.  It is related to alabaster and desert rose, but not to selenium. It’s name is derived from the Greek name for the moon.  It has a striated appearance (consisting of parallel lines) and a silky sheen.  Selenite is usually transparent, colorless, or white, although can sometimes have a light coloring from the presence of other minerals.

Selenite can begin to dissolve in water, so it is important to never get it wet.  Because selenite is so soft and can dissolve in water, it’s not usually made into jewelry except for serious crystal fans. If you do wear it as jewelry, be careful to not expose it to the elements, and perhaps only wear it for a short period of time such as in a ritual.  There are many uses for Selenite.  Empaths, those with intuition and psychic abilities, people who meditate and those who are into purification use it in their practices for it’s clearing properties.
