A Morning For Mindfulness
This morning I woke up and decided to work on my mindfulness and self-care routine because both have been sorely neglected over the past few months. We get so caught up in our daily work schedules, time constraints, appointments and household chores that we forget that we need nurturing and care in order to be able to sustain all these activities and be our vital selves each day. Normally, I jump in the shower and rush through it so I can be at a meeting, jump on a conference call or run errands without a single thought.
Today I vowed, my morning was going to be much different. As I filled the tub with water, I closed my eyes and really listened to the water coming out of the spout and the way it sounded different as the tub got fuller. I poured in some essential oils and again closed my eyes to experience the wonderful and envigorating smell as it drifted through the room. I love to listen to soundscapes on the television while I am in the tub because it is mentally and physically therapeutic for me. I turned on the music while the tub was filling and immediately I was transported to a much calmer and more relaxed state of being.
I set out my shampoo, soap, face mask, razor and foot wraps that I wanted to use during my bath along with some sea salt for the full spa experience and slowly lowered myself into the inviting water. As I sank down and arranged my pillow, I couldn’t help but wonder why I didn’t take the time to do this more often. All my senses were alert to this wonderful experience.
Each time my mind would wander to something I needed to do later or someone that I wanted to call later, I would command myself to “return to center” so I could focus only on the current moment. For me, it takes awhile to turn off my mind because it is racing constantly so I have found that returning to center helps me focus better on the present moment.
As I washed my hair, I made sure to notice the experience the soft suds on my fingertips and on my head as I massaged my scalp mindfully. I love to use Aveda’s Shampure on my hair because it elicits the most amazing smell and enhances the total experience. I have found that certain smells can transport me and help to ensure a pleasurable experience. Some people like more fruity smells for bath salts or bubbles but I find soothing smells such as rosemary and lavender suit me best. Each step of my spa experience unlocked additional delights because I managed to say present for most of the bath.
I would highly recommend taking the time to pamper yourself and do this mindful exercise for yourself. The experience for me was pure joy and not unlike an expensive spa day. Afterall isn’t that the goal? Relaxation, comfort, joy, delight. What better way to spend your morning with you as the recipient of all that bliss. We deserve it…
