It’s Almost Halloween
With Halloween right around the corner, I am seeing more and more homes decorated in honor of this time-honored tradition. My neighbors across the street have a graveyard themed setting with a lot of cobwebs and skeletons with cornstalks, pumpkins and ghosts. They were quite creative in getting it set up and I have to admit, although I don’t decorate much anymore since my kids have grown up and moved away, I am really enjoying the season and it has brought back some wonderful memories of Halloween’s past.
I have always been nostalgic about this holiday, and it dates back to my elementary school days. My teacher was quite creative in her own right and had each of us take a brown paper grocery bag and paint them in various Indian themes to wear. We cut a large hole in the bottom of the bag and slipped it over our heads. She cut out armholes for each us and we each had a wonderful costume. We then took Quaker oats containers and made drums which we also painted.
We were studying the various Indian tribes and preparing for a play about Thanksgiving so she had us make headdresses with bright colored feathers. Since it was so close to Halloween, I remember loving my costume so much that I wanted to wear it all the time. It was only natural that it would make for a perfect Halloween costume.
We had more fun beating on our drums with wooden spoons and dancing around our fake fire; definitely wonderful memories. I am so grateful that there are small children in my neighborhood so I can still enjoy the holiday decorations without having to put forth the effort in setup and cleanup. I can’t wait until my own children have kids so I can be the fun grandma with great costume ideas and decorating ideas.
